HumanKind Helps Lynchburg Region Thrive Through Impact Programs & Community Initiatives
James Black
Since its founding in 1903, the mission of Lynchburg region nonprofit HumanKind has been to consistently provide guidance and assistance to those striving to live healthier and better lives. Through over a hundred years of faithful service, HumanKind strives to be a catalyst for community action in the Lynchburg region, addressing the complex challenges faced by thousands of children, individuals, and families across the region.
To help achieve these goals, HumanKind offers a variety of targeted programs in critical impact areas, including health & wellness, early childhood development, youth & family services, mental health counseling, services for adults with developmental disabilities, and economic development services. First and foremost, HumanKind believes that physical health and wellness are key components in the overall health and vitality of an individual, and they provide a variety of physical activities intended to take advantage of over 160 acres of land currently owned by the nonprofit.
HumanKind’s early childhood development team provides the full continuum of services for children from their birth to age twelve, offering a one-stop resource for both parents and professionals seeking parenting support, child care, and other resources. Similarly, HumanKind’s Youth and Family services offer parenting classes, facilitation services, and foster care for families at all stages of life.
Critically, HumanKind’s mental health assistance programs provide a healthy foundation from which their clients can build their lives around, assisted by professionals at Blackwater Counseling. Also, HumanKind’s adult services provide residential community-based group homes, supervised living apartments, and sponsored homes across the state, designed to support adults with developmental disabilities. The last area of impact programs provided by HumanKind centers around economic opportunity, which helps individuals and families develop plans and strategies for achieving lasting financial success.
The nonprofit’s mission of helping individuals across the Lynchburg region live healthier and better lives goes beyond their in-house programs and are highlighted in a series of annual events that encourage and inspire participation among all members of the community. Occurring on August 21, 2021, Milkapalooza, a partnership between The Motherhood Collective and Women & Children’s Services at Centra, is a large community picnic highlighting breastfeeding awareness, and features live music, food trucks, and more!
On September 14, 2021, the HumanKind Golf Challenge targets the needs of families in the Greater Richmond area. Tentatively scheduled for October, alumni of the Presbyterian Home are welcomed annually for a fun–filled celebration at HumanKind’s Homecoming event. Lastly, HumanKind showcases the human spirit with the Kindness Classic & Youth Run, Lynchburg Turkey Trot, relay events, and the Lynchburg Toy Run, featuring hundreds of area bikers helping bring gifts to needy children & families for Christmas.
The impact programs, community initiatives, and local events made possible by HumanKind simply would not exist today without the contributions of individual donors. Thankfully, there are many ways to give to the nonprofit, including corporate giving, real estate, event sponsorship, as well as individual giving.
